The Canary Islands lose over 15% of their renewable generation for lack of storage
More than 15% of the renewable energy produced in the Canary Islands never reaches the system for lack of storage capacity, as the regional energy minister, Mariano Hernández Zapata, told the regional parliament in a hearing reported by El Periódico de la Energía. The regional government is backing pumped hydro —Chira-Soria under construction, with over 200 MW of turbining and some 3,500 MWh; a future 200 MW scheme at Güimar; a 30 MW, 600 MWh study on La Palma— and batteries at wind and solar farms, and is pressing the State for the decree that would pay storage in the non-mainland systems.
