Basque Government asks Brussels for an electricity toll on non-European data centres

The Basque Government has written to the European Commission proposing that non-European data-centre operators and users pay an additional toll or charge on their electricity consumption, so that the bill for the network investment tied to new data centres is shared differently. Its Department of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability says it is concerned about the effect of that demand on the electricity bills of Basque industry and households, and adds that it has filed submissions on the state draft decree on data centres asking to adjust the required share of new renewable generation.
