Metabarri opens in Bizkaia, turning organic waste into grid-ready biomethane

The Bizkaia provincial council, the Basque Energy Agency and PreZero have opened Metabarri, a plant that takes household organic waste, treats it and produces biomethane ready for injection into the natural gas transmission network, next to the composting plant at the Artigas Ecopark. Its promoters describe it as the first facility in Spain to bring all three stages together on one site. The investment is 25 million euros, over 17 of them from Next Generation funds. It has been in testing since June, expects its first waste in late September and will treat 50,000 tonnes a year.
